Duncan Ferguson has been confirmed as the new manager of Glentoran, with the Northern Irish Premiership club announcing the appointment on Monday.
The 54-year-old former Everton, Rangers and Newcastle United striker takes charge at The Oval following the departure of Declan Devine in mid-September.
Ferguson becomes the 10th Scottish manager in Glentoran’s history and adds another high-profile name to the list of former Everton figures who have gone on to manage the Belfast club.
His appointment is being viewed as a significant move for the Irish Premiership, with Ferguson bringing considerable name recognition, top-level playing experience and previous coaching responsibilities to his new role.
Ferguson Targets Trophies at Glentoran
Ferguson has made his ambitions clear, insisting that Glentoran should compete for major honours rather than settle for simply participating in domestic competitions.
In a statement released by the club, the new manager said: “I want to win trophies here. Glentoran should be challenging for the title and every cup and shield we enter.”
He also acknowledged that supporters would judge his tenure by the silverware he delivers.
“I know that success here will be judged on what we win,” Ferguson added.
The former striker has also committed to the project for the long term, confirming that he will live in Belfast and become involved in the local community.
“I have signed for the long term and will be living in Belfast. I want to get to know the people at the Club and in the wider community and become part of life here,” he said.
His comments suggest that Ferguson intends to build more than a short-term managerial presence, with an emphasis on establishing relationships with supporters and the wider club community.
Everton Experience and Previous Managerial Roles
Ferguson arrives at Glentoran with a distinguished playing career and experience within Everton’s coaching structure.
During his time at Everton, he served as interim manager on two occasions and also worked as an assistant coach under Carlo Ancelotti.
Those experiences gave him exposure to different managerial approaches and the demands of working within a major football club.
However, his permanent managerial career has presented a different set of challenges.
Ferguson took charge of Forest Green Rovers in 2023 before moving to Inverness Caledonian Thistle. His spell at the Scottish club ended in October 2024 following relegation and his subsequent dismissal.
The Glentoran appointment therefore represents another opportunity for Ferguson to establish himself as a permanent manager and demonstrate his ability to deliver sustained results.
Glentoran Begin a New Era
Glentoran moved to appoint Ferguson after the departure of Declan Devine in mid-September.
Interim coaches Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann oversaw a strong run of results, helping the club remain near the top of the Premiership table. Their spell included a recent 1-0 home victory over Limavady United.
Ferguson now inherits a team with a positive platform and expectations of competing for domestic honours.
His immediate challenge will be to build on that momentum while introducing his own ideas and establishing the standards he expects from the squad.
The club’s supporters will be keen to see whether his arrival can translate into consistent performances and a serious challenge for the league title and domestic cups.
High-Profile Appointment Raises Expectations
Ferguson’s arrival is widely regarded as one of the most prominent managerial appointments in the history of the Irish Premiership.
His reputation from English football is expected to increase attention on Glentoran, potentially bringing greater visibility to the club and its domestic competitions.
However, the former striker has made it clear that reputation alone will not define his success. His stated objective is to win trophies, and the pressure will be on him to turn those ambitions into results.
Ferguson is expected to take charge for the first time against Ballymena United on Saturday.
That fixture will provide his first opportunity to begin shaping Glentoran’s next chapter on the pitch.
What Comes Next for Glentoran?
Glentoran enter the new managerial era with expectations high and a clear message from their new boss: the club should be competing for every available honour.
Ferguson’s experience at Everton and his previous managerial appointments provide the background for the challenge ahead, but his success will ultimately depend on performances, results and the trophies he can deliver.
His commitment to living in Belfast and becoming part of the community also signals an intention to establish lasting connections beyond matchdays.
For Glentoran, the appointment represents an opportunity to build on their strong recent results and pursue a new period of success under a recognisable figure from British football.
