Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal national team duty amid reports of tensions with coach Jorge JesusCristiano Ronaldo during Portugal national team duty amid reports of tensions with coach Jorge Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team camp following a reported dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, placing the 41-year-old forward at risk of disciplinary action under Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) regulations.

Ronaldo’s departure came ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark, following growing tension over his involvement in the team’s recent matches. Although the federation has not announced any formal sanction, its disciplinary rules allow for a suspension and financial penalty if a player abandons national-team duties without valid justification.

Ronaldo Left Out Against Norway

The situation began on September 27, when Portugal secured a 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, with Ronaldo remaining an unused substitute.

It was the first time in 18 years that Ronaldo had been named in a Portugal squad without making an appearance. Reports and subsequent comments suggested that the forward had expected to feature in the match.

Jesus later explained that he had informed Ronaldo that he would not start against Norway but could be introduced from the bench. However, the coach ultimately decided against making the substitution based on how the match developed.

Jesus also said he had initially planned for Ronaldo to sit out both the Norway and Denmark fixtures as part of a workload-management approach.

The decision reportedly contributed to growing frustration, with questions emerging over the relationship between the two men, who had previously worked together at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

Tensions Escalate Ahead of Denmark Match

The situation intensified following Jesus’s press conference in Copenhagen ahead of Portugal’s meeting with Denmark.

The coach rejected suggestions of a disagreement with Ronaldo, insisting that the same rules applied to every player and that team selection remained the responsibility of the coaching staff.

Shortly after the press conference, Portuguese media reported that Ronaldo had left Parken Stadium accompanied by members of staff and had not taken part in training with the rest of the squad. His private jet was later tracked travelling back towards Madrid.

Ronaldo subsequently confirmed his departure in a statement published on Instagram.

The Portugal captain said that, following the national team manager’s press conference and a conversation with FPF president Pedro Proença, he had decided to leave the training camp.

He added that he would explain the reasons for his decision to the Portuguese public at a later date and wished his teammates luck for the upcoming fixture.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that preparations for the Denmark match would continue with the remaining players.

Ronaldo Could Face Disciplinary Action

Ronaldo’s departure has raised questions about whether the Portuguese Football Federation will take disciplinary action.

Under the FPF’s disciplinary regulations, a player who has been called up to the national team and abandons or fails to attend training, a match or another national-team activity without justification may face a suspension ranging from one to six months.

Professional players may also be fined between €500 and €1,000 under the provision.

The regulation has attracted attention following Ronaldo’s exit, with outlets including Goal and The Sun highlighting the potential consequences.

However, as of October 1, no suspension or financial penalty has been announced. The federation has yet to confirm whether Ronaldo’s departure will be treated as an offence under the disciplinary rules.

Any potential sanction would depend on the circumstances surrounding his exit and the federation’s assessment of whether his decision was justified.

Jorge Jesus Insists There Is No Lasting Rift

The reported disagreement comes after a brief period of public alignment between Ronaldo and Jesus.

Jesus was appointed Portugal head coach following Roberto Martínez’s departure, with Ronaldo having supported his appointment after the country’s World Cup campaign. The pair had also appeared together publicly earlier in the international window.

Despite the latest developments, Jesus has maintained that there is no lasting problem between them and that Ronaldo remains available in principle.

Ronaldo’s Instagram statement, however, did not clarify whether he intends to return to the national team for future fixtures or whether the departure signals a more serious breakdown in his relationship with the coaching staff.

The forward has not announced his retirement from international football.

Portugal Prepare for Denmark Without Ronaldo

Portugal will face Denmark without their captain as preparations continue following his departure from camp.

Ronaldo remains one of the most prominent figures in Portuguese football, and his absence places additional attention on the team’s performance and the decisions of its coaching staff.

For now, the immediate issue is whether the federation will pursue disciplinary proceedings and whether Ronaldo will provide further details about his decision to leave.

With no formal sanction announced and no retirement statement from the player, the longer-term implications for Ronaldo’s international career remain uncertain.
